My name is Kelsey and I am a certified practising Speech Pathologist working at Beam Health’s Toowong clinic in North Brisbane. I wanted to share a snippet of my journey as a Speech Pathologist and provide some information about speech pathology and how we can support children, young people and their families.

My journey so far

I studied at Australian Catholic University (ACU) and graduated with a Bachelor of Speech Pathology. I have always lived in Queensland and knew that I would work in the Sunshine State going forward, so I immediately jumped into my role working in North Brisbane within complex disability. I have learnt so much already in my career   including working with children, families and clients, navigating the NDIS, working within a multidisciplinary team, and the importance of creating meaningful client-centred goals.  While working full-time, I have also undertaken further education to support my clients, fill gaps in my knowledge and find specific areas of interest. I completed the HANEN It Takes Two To Talk program, the Sounds-Write phonic program, an orofacial myology foundational course and further training in speech and language interventions.

Moving to Beam Health

At the end of 2022 I knew it was time to spread my wings and dive into the world of Beam.I’ve spent my first few weeks here setting up work and clinic spaces, engaging in initial consultations with clients, getting to know my amazing colleagues, and creating relationships with health and education services in Toowong and the surrounding areas who may benefit from our support.

In addition to our Toowong clinic in Brisbane’s north, Beam Health offers Speech Pathology at multiple locations in New South Wales, including Warners Bay, Cessnock and Tuggerah. It’s great to be able to collaborate with my colleagues here in Brisbane, as well as interstate. Across Beam’s four locations, the Speech Pathology team consists of 10 brilliant clinicians who all have extensive knowledge, skills and experience to share.

Since starting with Beam I’ve quickly begun to build a caseload of clients. I find it very rewarding to be able to positively impact my clients’ lives. I have a special interest in working with children and young people who may have literacy or language difficulties, but I am so glad I have completed vast and different trainings to equip me with the skills to support all clients.

What to expect in a speech pathology session at Beam

Our friendly intake and administration staff will guide you through the booking process to answer any questions you have and ensure you’re prepared for the first appointment.

The initial speech pathology session is focused on gathering lots of information to support us in creating functional client-centred goals. Ongoing sessions can look different depending on the client and their goals, but I always incorporate enjoyable activities that align with a client’s strengths to make sure each session is engaging and supportive.

We will also conduct periodic reviews to monitor how we are progressing and make sure the intervention and activities are right for the client. Toward the end of each session, I give an overview of what we covered, answer questions and provide information on home programs or practice for the client to do between sessions.
