Behaviour Support Plan
An NDIS Behaviour Support Plan is a personalised, written plan developed by a registered NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioner or Psychologist in consultation with the individual, their family, and support team. It provides clear, evidence-informed strategies for supporting individuals when behaviours of concern occur, and for building skills to communicate needs more safely and effectively over time.
There are two types of plans:
- Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plans
Detailed plans informed by a Functional Behaviour Assessment, addressing needs, goals, and positive strategies to support the individual, family, and carers. May include guidance on regulated restrictive practices where required under NDIS guidelines. Plans are reviewed regularly to ensure ongoing relevance and effectiveness. - Interim Behaviour Support Plans
Short-term plans are prepared when restrictive practices are being used or may be required. These plans maintain safety and provide support until a comprehensive plan is completed.
The planning process includes initial meetings, data collection, observations in natural settings, and consultation with key stakeholders. Once a plan is finalised, Beam Health can provide ongoing therapy and support in clinic, home, or school settings to help children, teens, young adults, and adults achieve meaningful behaviour change.
Behaviour Therapy
Behaviour therapy at Beam Health focuses on understanding the reasons behind behaviours and supporting individuals to communicate their needs effectively and participate fully in their environment. Our neuroaffirming approach recognises that behaviours often reflect unmet needs, internal experiences, or environmental challenges.
Our NDIS registered Behaviour Support Practitioners and Psychologists work with families, carers, and other providers to:
- Identify the purpose of behaviours and the needs they reflect
- Develop practical strategies for communication, emotional regulation, and daily functioning
- Implement environmental adaptations to reduce triggers or barriers
- Build skills and independence for the individual and their support network
Therapy may be informed by a Behaviour Support Plan (comprehensive or interim) and can take place in clinic or natural settings, such as home or school. Where appropriate, Beam Health takes a multidisciplinary approach, collaborating with speech pathologists, occupational therapists, and other allied health professionals to provide coordinated, meaningful support.
Our goal is to help individuals thrive, reduce distress, and confidently engage in daily life, rather than focusing solely on changing behaviour.
Behaviour Assessment
A Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) is a key step in understanding behaviour and guiding practical support. It helps identify unmet needs and reasons for behaviours rather than framing the person as the problem.
Our NDIS registered Behaviour Support Practitioners conduct assessments by:
- Observing behaviours in natural settings such as home, school, or clinic
- Speaking with the individual, family, carers, and support workers
- Reviewing past assessments and interventions
The assessment explores:
- Antecedents – what happens before the behaviour
- Behaviour – frequency, intensity, duration, and potential risks
- Consequences – what happens after the behaviour that may reinforce it
Cultural, religious, and individual circumstances are considered to ensure strategies are personalised. Assessment findings help inform behaviour support plans and practical interventions
